So What’s all the Fuss About Omega 3?
As we all know when it comes to miracle cures and health claims these are mostly pure fiction. Rarely does anything actually prove to be on a par with all the hype about it . I have never come across anything else which deserves so much the praise heaped upon it as Omega 3 fatty acids. Particularly interesting is the fact that both conventional and alternative medicine recognise the wonderful benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids. If you know anything about alternative health, or are knowledgeable about the natural health field, you’ll know this is something that doesn’t usually happen too often. Normally, conventional medicine supports the interventionist approach, not the preventative one.
Followers of conventional medicine frequently say how vitamin supplements are completely worthless and that herbal remedies are akin to witchcraft. I exaggerate but there is certainly a tendency in this direction! Although I'm not saying that I agree with this. These studies are often funded by pharmaceutical interests so they are often biased and a distortion of the truth. After all, if preventative healthcare took root in a big way, the demand for prescription drugs, which you basically only need when you already have a disease or disorder, would collapse.
The evidence about Omega 3 is so overwhelming that even conventional medical doctors often recommend their patients to increase their Omega 3 intake either through foods or supplements. It is the opinion of many healthcare experts that the thing most absent in our modern day diets is the essential nutrient Omega 3. This deficiency is now believed to play a major role in why there is such rampant heart disease, cancers, and brain disorders.
Unsurprisingly, when Omega 3 fish oil supplements are utilised several studies have demonstrated an improvement in many of these diseases and disorders. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to our wellbeing and I want to discuss this in more detail before going into the specific benefits for particular health problems. The power house of our brain is fats and without a continuous supply it will not be able to function correctly. It's something like trying to run an engine with no fuel. However, it’s even worse, because whereas a car would simply not run, the human brain instead begins to suffer from ailments and diseases.
What’s Wrong With The Modern Diet?
Modern meat and agricultural farming practices nowadays have made our food as lot less nutritious than it used to be. As a result foods that did contain high levels of Omega 3 fats no longer do.
Modern farming methods are based on producing as much profit as possible. Profit in itself is far from being bad but for the farmer it means that he wants to produce as much meat as he can as fast as he can.
The consequence of this is that whatever meat we buy it is typically grain-fed and fattened. In fact it is when our livestock is eating its natural food that it achieves a high Omega 3 content. Animals forced to eat grain based feed to quickly fatten them have virtually no Omega 3 content in their meat.
You’ve all heard the saying that you are what you eat. Well so are animals what they eat. if you eat the animals then you are what they eat, and that is largely grains and corns.
What about fish? Fish is the best source of Omega 3s but they contain lots of pollutants. And lots of these are highly toxic like PCBs, lead and mercury. The simple reason is that the oceans and rivers of the world have accumulated industrial pollution. However, there is a place in the clear waters around New Zealand where I believe I have found the best Omega 3 fish oil in the world.
